Sustainable Tourism
Asmara Urban Resort is a beacon of environmental responsibility, having met the stringent standards of the EC3 Global EarthCheck Standard for Building, Planning, and Design. EarthCheck, as the world’s leading certification program for sustainable travel and tourism businesses, ensures that Asmara Urban Resort’s sustainability practices are backed by over a decade of scientific, data-driven benchmarking. This recognition speaks to the resort’s unwavering commitment to both the environment and the local community.
Green Initiatives
Asmara Urban Resort’s architecture is thoughtfully designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. The buildings are positioned to optimize natural light while minimizing heat absorption, reducing the need for air conditioning during the day. The use of locally-sourced materials, such as volcanic rock, combined with extensive greenery, helps to naturally cool the resort’s spaces. Open courtyards further enhance natural ventilation and lighting, cutting down on energy consumption.
The resort employs energy-efficient lighting systems, using low-mercury bulbs fitted with photo sensors that adjust based on daylight availability. Water conservation is another core focus, with water-efficient appliances installed across the property. A hydropneumatic system with a booster pump ensures even water distribution throughout the resort, while a dual-line irrigation system uses recycled water for landscaping. These initiatives allow the resort to cut water consumption by 50%, all while avoiding the depletion of local water resources.
Local Community Engagement
Asmara Urban Resort is dedicated to fostering a positive impact on the surrounding community. The majority of the resort’s staff are local hires, supporting the region’s economy. As part of its commitment to sustainable sourcing, over 85% of the resort’s goods and services, including fresh produce and handcrafted décor, are procured from local suppliers. For example, the resort sources its terracotta tiles, intricately crafted with traditional designs, from a nearby village, boosting the local artisanal economy.
The resort also champions social sustainability through education, offering English classes at local schools and partnering with organizations like Manajemen Pariwisata Indonesia (Mapindo) to provide scholarships and hospitality training to local students. Additionally, Asmara Urban Resort actively supports the Solemen Indonesia Foundation, a Bali-based non-profit that delivers health education and supports disadvantaged communities in the region.
Situated within the heart of a culturally rich region, Asmara Urban Resort respects local traditions and the surrounding landscape. The resort maintains unimpeded access to nearby rice paddies for local farmers and ensures that cultural and religious practices, including pilgrimages and festivals, are upheld, with direct access to the beach preserved for these important ceremonies.
